5 reasons to drink Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV: Superfood or Snake Oil?

Like you, we take our health seriously at Civil Ferments (especially with two nutritional therapists on board)—which is why we created our own version of the colonial-era shrub! We swapped the refined cane sugar and white vinegar for local, raw honey and raw apple cider vinegar to create a cocktail and soda mixer with benefits beyond the taste.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has become a darling of the holistic nutrition world, and you may have seen internet bloggers linking it to everything from weight loss to a cure for cancer.

While we certainly don’t think ACV is the cure for all ails, it does pack some serious nutrients with scientifically-validated benefits. See some of our favorites below!

 

 

Chock full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!

ACV contains vitamin C, B vitamins, minerals—like iron, phosphorous, and potassium (1)—and polyphenols that protect the body from free radicals (2).

 

Great for digestion

We haven’t found research on this, but anecdotally many people claim that drinking diluted ACV before meals helps to eliminate bloating and heartburn by increasing stomach acid (and we agree!).

We like to amplify this by taking advantage of the digestive benefits of ginger…dilute half an ounce of our Lemon Ginger Shrub in water and drink 15 minutes before eating!

 

A source of beneficial bacteria

You know the cloudiness at the bottom of an ACV bottle? Shake it up and consume, because it’s full of beneficial bacteria and yeasts!

 

May help lower blood sugar

Drinking ACV before bedtime has been shown to decrease fasting blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes (6).

Warm water and shrub nightcap, anyone?

 

Could lower cholesterol and blood pressure

Several studies link consumption of ACV to decreased blood pressure (3) and cholesterol (4), and a lower risk of heart disease! This is thought to be, in part, due to its alpha linolenic acid content (5).
