The Mary Pickford was created in the 1920’s and was named after the famous silent film star. This is a rum forward cocktail with some nice fruity notes. Equal parts pineapple juice and rum make for a nice balance and the liqueur and grenadine addition add some needed light sweeter tones. This cocktail was a natural fit for our Pineapple Lavender shrub, which helped to brighten up the sweeter notes and simultaneously add some bite.
This Shrubbie is very refreshing and easy to make. Since we had some grenadine left over from last week we wanted to experiment with it some more and see what we could come up with. This is the first time we’ve ever played with Maraschino Liqueur, and we can say it’s a very unique and fun addition. Like our shrubs, a little bit of this liqueur goes a long way! It tastes like sour cherry upfront along with some almond and vanilla notes. Now that we’ve got some in our liquor cupboard you can be sure we’ll be adding it into Shrubbies down the road!
The Mary Pickford is a great warmer weather drink but isn’t so fruit forward that you wouldn’t be able to enjoy a few of these throughout the winter.

Double straining is helpful in this Shrubbie because of the pineapple juice. Even with straining once some fruit matter can still sneak through. If pouring is slowed down significantly because of build up in the second strainer, use the bottom of the cocktail shaker and gently tap the edge of the fine mesh strainer to help liquid flow better.
